The school

The School
RSG Broklede is a regional secondary school for pupils from Breukelen and surroundings. The picturesque town of around 14000 inhabitants is situated on the river Vecht, between Amsterdam (35 km) and Utrecht (20 km). The school was founded in 1970 as a state school and was governed by the town council from 1990. Since 2010 the school is under governance of a board, together with the Rientjes Mavo in Maarssen which offers junior secondary education (four years, vmbo-tl).
A modern building houses the school, a small theatre, the local library, a branch of the music school and a day-care centre. Our school has around  1400 pupils and though many are from Breukelen we are a regional school  drawing pupils from many neighbouring towns and villages. The school is run by a headmaster and two deputy heads, who supervise team leaders, about 95 teachers and 25 non-teaching staff members.

The school has always had a sound academic tradition, preparing students for university (six years in the vwo section) or senior general secondary education (five years in the havo section). In the first three years pupils follow a core curriculum, that used to be characterised by a philosophy of mixed  ability teaching. Since 1994, when the government reorganised the first stage of secondary education, the pupils have been grouped according to ability in three streams or levels: havo, havo/vwo, vwo. It remains possible for pupils to switch streams. After the first three years the pupils enter the higher level where havo and vwo students choose from four profiles: Culture and Society, Economy and Society, Nature and Technology, and Nature and Health.

Bilingual education
In 2003 the school started a bilingual stream (tvwo). In this bilingual stream bright vwo pupils have more than half of their classes in English and follow a more demanding programme. In the 5th and 6th form of tvwo the pupils are enrolled in the IB Diploma Programme for English A2, which will enable them to get an IB certificate for English A2.
In 2017 the school also started a bilingual stream in havo (thavo).
In the region the school is known for its high level of education, its attention for individual pupils, its counselling, and its outstanding results in the creative departments. Apart from these activities there are many fields in which pupils can be active: drama, sports, poetry, music; they all have their place in the school’s extra-curricular activities.

Pupils are admitted to the first form at the age of 12 after leaving primary school. Usually they are placed in accordance with the advice of the primary school teacher and principal, though sometimes additional testing is required. Pupils who want to do tvwo all have to do a test. At a later stage pupils from vmbo-tl schools may continue their education at our school in the fourth form.

Parent and student participation
The governing of the school is discussed and to some extent controlled by a committee of students, parents, teachers and non-teaching staff members.

Lessons and subjects
In a five-day week pupils attend about 32 lessons of fifty minutes. The subjects taught are:
Dutch, English, French, German, Geography, History, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Science,   Economics, Social Studies, Global Studies, Music, Arts, Technology, Physical Education, Projects and Information and Communication Technology.
